Through the Designer’s Window: Finding Clarity Amid Chaos

Ever feel like you’re staring out the window, hoping the world will make sense?

Early in my design career, that window was my escape from the chaos of feedback loops, deadlines, and never-ending meetings. But soon, I realized the view outside wasn’t going to solve my challenges – only I could. So, how do you find clarity when it feels like everything is spiraling?

I remember one pivotal moment when I was working on a redesign for a product at a startup. Our team was small but mighty (read: everyone wore a thousand hats). Midway through, the CEO requested a complete pivot based on market trends. At first, I froze. But instead of panicking, I decided to treat the chaos as an opportunity to regroup, refocus, and, most importantly, grow.

Here are three tips that helped me thrive:

Zoom Out to See the Big Picture

In chaotic moments, it’s easy to get lost in the details. Ask yourself, “What’s the goal here?” This bird’s-eye view can help you prioritize what truly matters.

Master the Art of Strategic Listening

Feedback will come from all directions – managers, stakeholders, even clients. Listen to everyone, but don’t lose your voice. Filter out noise and apply insights that align with your design vision.

Find Your “Window Moments”

Take intentional breaks. Whether it’s sketching, walking, or looking out of an actual window, these moments of quiet can help you recharge and tackle problems creatively.

As designers, we often feel like we’re at the mercy of chaos, but the truth is, chaos can be our greatest teacher. So, here’s my question: How do you turn moments of uncertainty into opportunities to shine?
