Have you ever stared into a mirror and wondered if the person looking back is ready for the challenges ahead?

As a young designer stepping into the corporate world, I often found myself questioning, “Am I good enough?”

The truth is, the mirror doesn’t lie – but it also doesn’t show your potential until you start believing in it.

When I started at a large corporation, I was given the task of redesigning an onboarding flow. I was eager to prove myself and dove straight into the project. But my early drafts were overly complex, trying to impress rather than solve. My lead gently pointed out that I was designing for me, not the user. That was my turning point – I realized that growth as a designer begins with honest self-reflection and the willingness to adapt.

Here are three practical tips for navigating your journey:

Look in the Mirror

Regularly assess your strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself, “What am I doing well? What can I improve?” Feedback from peers and mentors can be your clearest mirror.

Focus on the User, Not Your Ego

It’s tempting to create designs that showcase your skills, but always ask, “Is this solving the problem?” User-centered design is what will make you stand out.

Polish Your Skills

Just like a mirror needs cleaning to reflect clearly, your skills need constant honing. Learn new tools, keep up with trends, and don’t shy away from challenges that push you out of your comfort zone.

So, the next time you catch your reflection, ask yourself: What does this version of me need to grow into the designer I aspire to be? How will you use your “mirror moments” to shape your future?
